Meet Your Freshmen 2011: David Johnstone

David Johnstone joins his brother Jacob at Michigan Tech this Fall after playing for the Indiana Ice of the USHL for the past two seasons. Last season in the USHL he was a top ten scorer amassing 20 goals and 3o assists in 57 regular season game. Look for Johnstone to work his way up the lineup this season as he adjusts to the college game.

THG: Why did you decide to come to Michigan Tech? Who else wanted you to play for them?

David Johnstone (DJ): I decided to come to Michigan Tech because my older brother Jacob plays here and it would be cool to play with him at a very high level of hockey.

THG: Which team are you most excited to beat this season? 

DJ: St Lawrence because one my good friends plays for them.

THG: What are your hockey goals for this season? after Michigan Tech? 

DJ: My hockey goals this year are to help Michigan Tech bring back the winning tradition. It would be nice to play professional hockey but if not I would to do something with or for athletes.

THG: Which older Husky player on the team is your mentor? 

DJ: Probably my brother Jake. I have watched him play growing up and he's showed me things to help me get to the next level.

THG: What do you think of new head coach, Mel Pearson?

DJ: Mel Pearson is a great coach really high intensity and knows his stuff and has learned a lot from coaching at his last school.

THG: What do you think of the new college hockey landscape (formation of Big Ten & NCHC)?

DJ: I think the new hockey landscape will be good for overall college hockey it will be more competitive.

THG: What do you bring to the team, where do you feel you'll contribute the most?

DJ: I think what I bring to the team is skill and physical play. I can see the ice well.

THG: What aspect of your game do you think needs the most improvement to help improve your game for the college level?

DJ: I think I still need to work on my defensive game.

THG: How have you been preparing for the jump from junior hockey to WCHA hockey?

DJ: I have been training with Jacob and he has been pushing me and showing the ropes of college hockey.

THG: Who is your biggest influence in hockey?

DJ: My biggest influence on hockey has to be my whole family especially my mom and dad (Jeff and Jori Thocker)

THG: Does the energy and noise level of the crowd affect the way you play?

DJ: Yes, nothing beats hearing your own fans cheer you on when your playing. It gives you a little extra jump.

THG: What is your major at Michigan Tech?

DJ: Exercise Science.

THG: What do you know about Mitch's Misfits or TechHockeyGuide.com?

DJ: I've heard of TechHockeyGuide but not Mitch's Misfits I see people wearing shirts with that on them all the time around campus.

THG: Who are you rooming with this year? Tell me something fun about your roommate! 

DJ: I'm rooming with Jimmy Davis, Riley Sweeney, and James Pino.

THG: Recite your favorite movie quote... and just in case, tell me what movie it's from.

DJ: "Yesterday was the only easy day." Any Given Sunday

THG: Where is your favorite spot to relax?

DJ: My favorite spot to relax right now is in my place at hillside with my roommates.

THG: Do you think you'd be more productive as linemates with your brother?

DJ: Jacob and I are similar players and I think if we play together we can bring a lot to the team.

THG: What would you try if you knew you wouldn't fail?

DJ: Win a triathalon.

THG: What's your favorite TV show?

DJ: Two and a Half Men.

THG: Finally, what would you like to say to all of the Michigan Tech faithful?

DJ: Let's get the winning tradition back to MTU hockey.
