The Michigan Tech Huskies were off this week, so it was announced that they would play in an intrasquad game in a local arena, the Calumet Colosseum. Black team goalie Kevin Genoe came up big in the eventual shootout, stopping all three shots and securing a victory for the Black team.

The team was split into two teams, which gave all non-injured players a chance to hit the ice in some game action.  The Gold team was led by senior captain Brett Olson and had Josh Robinson and Corson Cramer as the two goalies and was coached by assistant coach Damon Whitten.

The Black team was led by the freshmen group of Tanner Kero, Blake Pietila and Riley Sweeney, with Genoe in net and goalie coach Steve Shields behind the bench.  (See bottom for the complete rosters.)

The Gold team got on the board first with a shot from the point by Nick Cecere that found its way into the net. That was the only scoring in the first period, but both teams had a few chances and gave the crowd an entertaining game. In the second period, Ryan Furne and Mikael Lickteig scored for the Black team, making the score 2–1.

With 16.5 seconds remaining, Captain Olson called a time out. His Gold team lined up for the face off with six attackers and Dennis Rix managed to score the tying goal out of a scramble with only 2.1 seconds remaining.

Just as the goal was called, I had a tap on my shoulder. “Tell me those guys don’t want it,” said Coach Mel Pearson with a huge smile on his face. “It was a fun game to watch, I remember playing my games here, there was chicken wire behind the goals, not this netting. We loved it.”

There was no shootout planned, but the fans started a little “Shoot Out, Shoot out” chant and they received it. A three person shootout. Ryan Furne scored on his attempt and Genoe was perfect in net, notching the win for the Black team.

There was a good crowd at the arena. Talking to a local, he figured when full, 2000–2500 would be able to fit, I would say there was 1000–1200 there to watch the game.
