The 2016-17 WCHA season is right around the corner and with today's WCHA Media Conference Call comes the announcement of the preseason polls. Michigan Tech was picked to finish second by both the Media and Coaches receiving first place votes in both polls.
The WCHA Media Poll was conducted by Jack Hittinger and the Bemidji Pioneer and the 23 members of media chose Bowling Green to finish first and all four programs that reached the 2016 WCHA Final Five received first place votes from the Media:
|1||Bowling Green (15)||251|
|2||Michigan Tech (6)||239|
|3||Minnesota State (5)||236|
|4||Ferris State (2)||218|
The WCHA Coaches' Poll conducted by Shane Frederick and the Mankato Free Press also choose Bowling Green to finish first; in fact, the order of the WCHA Coaches' Poll is virtually the same, with the top seven teams remaining the same. The only changes come with the shuffling of the bottom three teams. The Coaches think Alaska-Anchorage will get the 8th and final playoff spot while the media selected Alaska, with Alabama-Huntsville 9th in both polls:
|1||Bowling Green (8)||89|
|2||Michigan Tech (2)||79|
Both publications also published Preseason WCHA Player of the Year, where Gerald Mayhew of Ferris State was chosen in both polls. Tyler Heinonen was the only Husky to receive votes in either poll. Preseason WCHA Rookie of the Year saw Angus Redmond, Thomas Beretta and Mitch Reinke receive votes in one of the polls.
Matt Roy was chosen in both polls as a member of the Preseason All-WCHA Team while Tyler Heinonen received a nod as a forward on the Media's Preseason All-WCHA Team. Joel L'Esperance, Mark Auk and Shane Hanna received votes on the Coaches' All-WCHA Team.
Michigan Tech opens their season October 1st with a Saturday-Sunday Series at Amsoil Arena against Minnesota-Duluth. Check back at Tech Hockey Guide over the next few weeks and we ramp back up for the 2016-17 Season.
