Michigan Tech remains unbeaten against Big Ten schools, defeating the #2 ranked Minnesota Gophers on their home ice, 3–2 in OT. For the second time this year, senior captain Brett Olson won the game within the first minute of overtime. This time, Olson beat two defenders and was able to get the puck five hole for the win.
“I was at the right place at the right time,” said Olson. “All the guys played well and I was able to finish.”
Minnesota started the scoring in the first period, followed by a goal by Blake Pietila. In the third, on a leftover power play from the second, Steven Siego was able to get one through from the point. Halfway through the third, Minnesota tied the game.
With five minutes to go in the game, each team traded breakaway opportunities. Josh Robinson was able to stop his and so did his Gopher counterpart Kent Patterson.
“I think this was one of our best games,” said Coach Mel Pearson. “I am really proud of the guys, coming back from last weekend and getting a huge win. I thought Robinson had his best game as well, the stop on the breakaway was huge for us.”
Robinson made 34 saves on 36 shots.
The Huskies look to get the sweep tonight, starting an hour later at 9:07 EST.
