Michigan Tech had a tough first period, giving up 4 goals, but responded in the second and third to earn a tie with the #1 team in the country, the Minnesota–Duluth Bulldogs.
“I am so proud of the team, to come back from a 4–0 deficit to tie a team this good,” coach Mel Pearson said. “The kids really deserved a win after that comeback.”
The Huskies played a poor first period, making too many mistakes and the #1-ranked Bulldogs did not miss on their opportunities.
The Huskies finally scored their first goal in the second period, off the stick of Ryan Furne. They had many other opportunities, but could not capitalize.
In the third period, Jordan Baker scored to make it a two goal game. Then Dennis Rix was whistled for a five-minute major with 14 minutes remaining.
Michigan Tech’s penalty killers were up to the task, not only killing the five-minute major but also adding a shorthanded goal to make it 4–3 when Jacob Johnstone put in a rebound.
Later, on a power play, Brett Olson set up David Johnstone for the game-tying goal. Both teams had chances in the final two minutes, but neither could capitalize.
“These are the type of games that define teams,” said Pearson. “We will come out and play better tomorrow. Tomorrow will be one heck of a hockey game.”
Let’s hope this is the spark that turns their good play into great play and the Huskies make this final run into the playoffs and grab a respectable position in the final WCHA standings.
Josh Robinson played the whole game and stopped 33 of 37 shots. “I wanted to leave Josh in and have him battle through this, and he did,” Pearson said.
