One night after scoring 4 straight goals to earn a tie with Minnesota–Duluth, the Michigan Tech Huskies scored the only 5 goals in the rematch, getting the shutout, the win, and most importantly, 3 conference points.
This was the best game the Huskies played on the year, and Coach Mel Pearson had plenty of praise for his team after the win. “Right from the start of the game, we were ready to play’,” said Pearson. “You could see what we are all about tonight. I told the boys to enjoy it tonight and tomorrow, Monday we need to get back to work.”
The Huskies came out strong and scored in the first period when Brett Olson intercepted a pass, walked in undefended and buried the shot. Then the Bulldogs took two quick penalties and Michigan Tech was able to find the back of the net on both power plays – the first from Blake Pietila and the second from David Johnstone. For the second straight night, the Johnstone brothers each scored – Jacob Johnstone netted the fourth goal for the Huskies.
Tanner Kero finished the scoring in the third period, netting a goal at the 0:40 mark, deflating any chance the Bulldogs had to salvage points.
Josh Robinson shut out the top team in the country, stopping all 29 shots he faced tonight. Even more amazing is shutting them out for five straight periods. “Congrats to Josh Robinson, he played great and has been playing great,” commented Pearson. “It was nice to see him get the win and shutout.”
“I told the fans at the alumni function that I am proud I graduated from Tech, and proud to have such support on the road from our fans,” said Pearson. “The future is bright for Michigan Tech Hockey. We have players and they can play.”
Those fans out there not yet on the bandwagon, now is the time. Jump on, the ride from here on out will be an exciting one.
The Huskies will travel to Mankato next weekend and look to continue their climb in the WCHA.
