Michigan Tech continued its torrid pace on the recruiting trail this fall by getting forward Brett Boeing to commit earlier this month. Boeing will be the first player from the storied Shattuck-St. Mary’s prep school in Faribault, Minnesota, to play for Michigan Tech since Quinton Krueger did in the late 1990s. Boeing is in his first season with the Midget Prep Team at SSM and is doing well through 15 games with 6 goals and 13 points. That’s good enough to tie for fifth on the team in goals. To give an idea of just how good that is, Minnesota State freshman Teddy Blueger and Ohio State recruit Zach Stepan were fifth and seventh, respectively, in goals for SSM last season. Each was selected in the 2012 NHL Draft, Blueger in the second round and Stepan in the fourth.

Before joining the prep team this season, Boeing spent the last three seasons at SSM on the Bantam Tier 1, Midget AA and U16 teams. In 2009–10, he had 18 goals and 62 points in 58 games and finished sixth in points on the Bantam Tier 1 team. The Barrington, Illinois, native followed that up with 31 goals and 80 points in 56 games for the 2010–11 Midget AA team, finishing top four in goals, assists and points. Last season, with the SSM U16 team, Boeing finished second only to top 2015 prospect Ryan Norman in goals and third in assists and points.

It is quite impressive for Michigan Tech to pull a recruit from Shattuck-St. Mary’s considering the program has had 37 NHL draft picks in the last decade and the list includes the following players with a WCHA connection: Zach Parise, Jonathan Toews, Kyle Okposo, Tyler Ruegsegger, Derek Stepan, Garret Roe, Erik Haula, Joe Basaraba, Mike Reilly and Casey Borer. This commitment is a great sign of the direction recruiting is heading for Michigan Tech under Mel Pearson. The Huskies have been mentioned in some high profile recruiting lately – being finalists for players like Will Merchant and Teemu Kivihalme was a good sign, but to actually get a commitment from Brett Boeing shows just how promising the future is for Michigan Tech even if the WCHA will go through major changes next season.

Brett Boeing could join the Huskies for the start of the 2014–15 season, but it is more likely we’ll see him in Houghton during the Fall of 2015. Evan Anderson (Penticton-BCHL), Dylan Steman (Cedar Rapids-USHL), Joel L’Esperance (Tri-City-USHL), and Jake Kauppila (Coulee Region-NAHL) are all forwards that could join the Huskies in 2014 but a few of them could be delayed until 2015, depending on how the next few seasons go for each of them.
