It sounds like a broken record, but Michigan Tech has been extremely busy off the ice this season. It almost feels like recruits have been lining up to commit to join the Huskies in the future. Trevor Cope signed up to follow Coach Pearson back in early November, marking the ninth player to commit since the fall semester began in Houghton. Cope is a Michigan native who spent two seasons playing forward with Victory Honda U18 before heading to British Columbia this season, where he is currently playing for the Langley Rivermen.

The 6-foot forward had 11 goals and 11 assists in his first season with Victory Honda U18 as a 16-year-old and followed that up with 20 goals and 18 assists at 17. He finished third in scoring in 2011–12 and is one of five players from that Victory Honda U18 team committed to play college hockey (Calderone – Princeton, Best – Vermont, Talcott – Michigan, Diamantoni – Northern Michigan).  Cope has done well in his transition from a U18 team to the BCHL, scoring 11 goals and 11 assists.

Cope’s commitment is intriguing given all the other players already signed up to join the Huskies, but Langley’s coach, Jordan Emmerson, had high praise for Trevor when he committed. “(Trevor) has great vision and is very smart out there,” Emmerson said. “We can throw him out in any situation and he will get the job done. He is also a great kid and teammate, and has been a pleasure to have around.” It is likely that Cope will have to fight to get playing time early in his college career so that he can grow as a player and push others for ice time later on, similar to what Blake Hietala has done this season. Another season of development in the BCHL will do him well and give him a better shot at having an early impact for the Huskies. He’s scheduled to head to Houghton for 2014–15 and is likely to find a niche as a depth player, but he does appear to have a scoring touch so he should help the Huskies continue to improve as a program.
