As liner notes to this week’s episode, we’ll include highlights from the Clarkson vs MTU series. For highlights of other series check out flohockey.tv.
We started with discussing the Clarkson series and so much of it came down to the major penalty for Donohue and how the Huskies responded when put on the PK for 3 minutes after the 4 on 4 session. MTU didn’t respond the best and turned a 2-0 lead into a 3-2 deficit in less than a minute, never recovering. That loss cost MTU 7 spots in the pairwise and about 170ish points. It will continue to be a talking point for the next four games as all of them will have huge PWR implications.
We had a nice conversation with Shane Frederick about Minnesota State’s first half and his impressions of the WCHA. We also touched on the teams planning to leave but most of that got cut for time (except on Patreon). That conversation detoured into talking about the formation of the NCHC and how little info the leaving teams have put out comparatively. The MMO teams need to come up with an actual plan and make some major announcements this Spring once the season is over.
This dovetailed into a discussion struggling athletics and Big Ten attendance before transitioning to a short chat about the loss of Doug Woog. For those of you who maybe don’t know him, he was player, coach and broadcast for the Minnesota Gophers. I only knew him for his broadcasts along side Frank Mazzocco on FSN. When I became a college hockey fan, WPT Wisconsin games and FSN Minnesota games were about the only ones you could get.
Dustin and I used to listen to MTU games on the radio and watch Gopher games on TV. I always enjoyed watching Doug (right above) and Frank (left) broadcast and the games lost something special when both were pushed aside. Woog will definitely be missed throughout college hockey, not just in Minnesota. If you’d like more on this, check out GPL Podcast (episode 164). Our condolences to Doug Woog’s family and Gopher Hockey for the loss of such an icon, plus from all my experience a great person.
Cutting Room Floor
Again, we went long and cut the podcast down from 95 minutes to about 65. About 15 minutes of our chat with Shane Frederick was cut out due to time, including a long discussion about MSU’s goaltending, past present and previous future. And since we’ve discussed reshuffling alot lately, this weekend’s discussion with Shane was partially cut for time.
We also cut a short segment about Coach Shawhan’s references to religion on his Show and we answered quite a few questions but we just went long this week. We discussed GLi scheduling, MTUs’ ability to recruit and California’s NCAA law impact on hockey. We’ll likely use the GLi segment next week with us previewing the tournament next week.
If you’d like to hear all of those segments now, you can always sign up at the Black Level on our patreon site and see what you think. For just $5/month you’ll get extended versions and early releases of each episode plus an authentic MTU hockey patch. If we get enough patrons, I’ll start doing a monthly recruiting podcast with interviews with future players and Junior Coaches. Special shoutout to Steve Buck, Mark Bailey, Marvin Wilson and Alex Slepak for taking the plunge! We really appreciate it guys.
