Episode 13 of the Chasing MacNaughton Podcast from Tech Hockey Guide; “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.” This week Tim Braun, Rob Gilreath and Dustin Lindstrom were joined by Austin Monteith, sports editor of the Bemidji Pioneer to discuss (times are approximate):
- Bemidji State and the WCHA with Austin Monteith (2:35)
- Winter Carnival (19:45)
- 100th Season News (33:47)
- MTU All-Decade Team (35:36)
- “Stump the Schwab” Game (45:39)
- Ferris State Preview (52:19 )
- WCHA Predictions (55:58)
We all thought it would be a good idea this week to take a bit of a step back from Tech’s current form and decided to start off with segment focused on Bemidji State and were joined by Austin Monteith. We chatted about the how the season is going for the Beavers and WCHA in general. Austin gave his perspective on Tech’s season from his outside view and slump was once again discussed. Although we already discussed where to eat in Bemidji we touched base on it again from a local’s perspective. Thanks to Austin again for joining us!
Winter Carnival was the next on the topic list and we dove into what we thought went wrong on the weekend. The weekend’s highlights are below if you want to relive Friday’s loss or watch the pretty goals from Saturday night.
Although it’s been known for a bit now, Jerry MacInnes announced officially that next year—the 100th season of Tech hockey—will start with a home series versus Michigan. Jerry’s part of the trophy presentation is something I look forward to every year, it’s always great to hear what she has to say!
Over the last few weeks, Tim has put together a series of articles on who he thinks fits for the all-decade team (Part one on the Forwards, and part 2 on the Defense and Goalies). We reviewed his choices and the process of making the lists.
Dustin took the time to put together a game for Tim and Rob. We enjoyed doing this quite a bit and are guessing it’s going to be regular feature. Instead of just having it be a feature we get to play, Dustin made them into Sporcle quizzes for you all to enjoy as well: “Current Players from Michigan” and “Current players in the NHL or AHL” are below with hints that Tim and Rob didn’t have.
Cut For Time
Well, we thought last week was a long one at 109 minutes, turns out it’s becoming a bit of a habit… This week we managed to get in a full five more minutes to get us up to 114 on the extended version. The cuts this week included some NHL trade discussion, more talk about Bemidji, and the current WCHA streaming. We dive a bit deeper into Winter Carnival with a bit about statues, the MVP and Queen’s annual interaction, and the goalie situation. During our discussion of the All-Decade team, we had a bit of tangential chat about best player on the worst team, naturally a few former Tech players came up.

That summary takes us to about half of the cut section. If you want to know the rest of what is in there, hop on over to Patreon and sign up! The cut for time format is a bit different than episodes past where Tim cut whole sections, but rather short bits of segments instead. Let us know if you guys like this editing format!
