Episode 17 of the Chasing MacNaughton Podcast from Tech Hockey Guide; “#TechStillSucks.” This week, Tim Braun, Rob Gilreath, and Dustin Lindstrom were joined by Shane Frederick from the Mankato Free Press to discuss (times are approximate):
- MTU @ NMU (3:00)
- UAA @ MSUM (26:00)
- LSSU @ BSU (30:48)
- CCHA (35:52)
- WCHA Semifinal Predictions (45:09)
- Corona Virus (50:52)
Like every week with a game, here’s the highlights from this weekend’s wonderful sweep of the Wildcats down in Marquette.
Joined by Shane Frederick again we started off with a lengthy discussion of some of the reffing issues recently seen around the WCHA. While we tend to focus on the MTU games, Shane’s perspective brings in a few other example from around the league. Just listen to Dave Ellis’ reaction to spear that lead to only a two minute call in OT during the Saturday night game. Judge for yourself if this is only two minutes.
We then moved on to talking a few other series around the league focusing first on the Mavericks series and moving on to what the Beavers need to do to maintain their at large bid.
Next up on the docket was getting the view from Mankato about the CCHA. We talked about some of the impacts of the name and the history it brings, is it really relevant?
Semi-final predictions come next and then we briefly touched on the first set of cancellations that happened at the time of the recording. I snuck in a small Michigan hockey update for those that had to listen to the Minnesota update last week.
Cut for time
The patrons will get a little over 28 minutes of extra content this week. Couple of topics that didn’t make it were: the goals this weekend, BGSU vs Alaska series review, a bit of extended new conference news, and Minnesota hockey topics. A lot has happened since we recorded this episode on Monday night. I’m not even sure what we said about COVID-19 that evening but I fully support the WCHA’s decision to take precautions and cancel the remainder of the WCHA tournament. In light of the pandemic and the fact that BGSU just returned from Alaska using commercial flights with a layover in Seattle, Washington which is currently on lock down, this makes complete sense, regardless of how much all of us wanted to see how the season played out.
Also due to the fact that the college hockey season is likely done, Chasing MacNaughton will be taking a break for at least a week. I might take this opportunity to focus on getting our first recruiting podcast done but that also depends on availability of Carson Bantle with the USHL also taking measures for their league.
