Season 3 Episode 11 of the Chasing MacNaughton Podcast from Tech Hockey Guide; Tanner Edwards Hattrick. This week, Tim Braun, Rob Gilreath and Dustin Lindstrom were joined by Kevin Dudley of the Mankato Free Press. With Kevin, the guys discussed Minnesota State’s season so far, Tanner Edwards, and Kevin picked for Matt in the Fantasy Challenge Segment. Without Kevin the guys discussed this past weekend’s series against Ferris State, this week’s Joe Shawahan Hour, and did a quick review of the rest of the CCHA.

Ferris State series recap

Before Kevin joined, the guys discussed and review Tech’s series this past weekend against Ferris State. Tim and Rob both expressed their displeasure with the start of the game on Friday, which Tim said made him want to throw up. Tim then talked about how it was nice to see Tech bounce back for the rest of the weekend. Rob agreed with this and pointed out that Ferris has shown that they can take a lead and hold it by beating Minnesota State earlier in the season. Dustin talked about being happy that Tech finally did what the guys have been asking them to do: score, close out the opponent and sweep the series. Tim also added that it was nice to see four new skaters getting into the lineup for the Saturday game.

Minnesota State’s season so far

After the Ferris State recap, Kevin joined the guys and the conversation started with a discussion about Minnesota State and their season so far. Kevin said that the season has been good so far and that the high expectation have been met to this point. Kevin also said that there is an illness going through the MSU locker room right now, but that it is not COVID related. Kevin added that he was interested in seeing the lineup card on Friday because he has no idea who Tech may be seeing.

Tim asked Kevin about MSU’s series last week and whether the media asked Coach Hastings about why he put out his best lineup against St. Thomas. Kevin talked about how that didn’t really get brought up and noted that Coach Hastings respects St. Thomas. He also pointed out that MSU’s third and fourth line played a lot during the Friday game. Ultimately, Kevin said that he didn’t have a problem with how Coach Hastings handled the series.

The conversation then switched to Tech Hockey Guide favorite, Tanner Edwards and Dustin provided Kevin with a recap of why he is a THG favorite. Kevin talked about a Edwards having a nagging injury last year which is why he didn’t play much. Kevin also discussed how hard it is for younger players to crack into the Top Ten of MSU’s lineup and get playing time. Rob pulled up the highlight of the hit that earned Edwards his five minute major and game misconduct and thought that it was a little unlucky for Edwards. All of the guys agreed that there was no other supplemental discipline needed.

Fantasy Challenge

With Matt out this week, Kevin took part in the Fantasy Challenge segment. Dustin started with a recap of the week which saw everyone getting more points than The Ghost. Dustin lead the week with nine points, Rob and Tim tied with eight points, Matt scored six points and The Ghost only had two points. There were no changes in the overall standings. This week, the focus was on defensemen and the players were five of the highest scoring defensemen in the country. The players this week play for the University of Michigan, the University of North Dakota, Lake Superior State University, Western Michigan University, and Minnesota State University.

The Joe Show

The guys then discussed this week’s Joe Shawhan Hour. Tim didn’t get much out of it other than noting that Joe echoed what the guys have said about the weekend. Rob pointed out Joe also talked about scheduling information which included news that Tech will be going out to Arizona for a holiday classic. The tournament won’t be in Vegas and this made Dustin grumpy. Tim was happy to hear about another tournament as it will hopefully help Tech’s pairwise rankings. Rob also talked about the three “bullets” that each team gets while scheduling each season and how Tech wastes two of those with the GLI and Winter Carnival.

CCHA review

The guys did a brief review of the rest of the CCHA that were in action last weekend. LSSU only got 15 shots on the weekend against MSU. Northern Michigan tied then won in OT and won in regulataion against Bowling Green, and Bemidji split with Arizona State University.

Cut for time

This week’s cut for time for Patrons is approximately 23 minutes long. Tim told a story about his old neighbors visiting and watching football and hockey. The guys discussed John Scott being on NPR’s Radiolab podcast. The longest segment was a nearly 20 minute discussion on NCAA regionals and western hockey teams.
