Season 5 Episodes 15 and 16 of the Chasing MacNaughton Podcast from Tech Hockey Guide; Becoming Harrison and Flat Tire. This week Tim Braun, Dustin Lindstrom, Rob Gilreath and Matt Cavender were joined by the voice of Ferris State Bulldog hockey Brody Keiser. In this episode, they discussed Ferris State’s season so far, how Brody came to be the voice of Bulldog hockey, the upcoming series between Michigan Tech and Ferris State, various food related questions, the CCHA, Michigan Tech’s game against Bemidji State and Tim’s weekend adventures.

Ferris State season review

The guys started with a quick review of Ferris State’s season so far. Brody thought that Ferris State has had a good start to the season and he talked about their ability to hang with the teams they’ve played. Tim thought it was nice to see Ferris State being competitive in their games.

Big shoes to fill

The guys quickly pivoted to talking with Brody about how he came to be the voice of the Bulldogs. Brody talked about loving the Ferris State community and applying when he heard the position was opening. Rob talked about the enjoyment of listening to the home announcers when Tech travels across the CCHA. Brody told a story about former voice of the Bulldogs, Harrison Watt, coming back this past weekend and paying a visit to the booth. The guys spent a couple minutes joking about the pronunciation of the R.L. Ewigleben Sports Complex.

Brody also talked about the other sports that he covers for Ferris State, including women’s soccer, football and volleyball. Later in the show, Matt asked Brody what his favorite Ferris State moment has been during his short time on the mic.

Ferris State series preview

Changing gears to the upcoming series between Michigan Tech and Ferris State, Tim asked Brody who will be in goal for Ferris State. Brody talked about Ferris State’s goaltenders splitting time so far this season, but wasn’t sure that would continue being the case given recent performances.

Tim also asked Brody which Ferris State player we should pay attention to on offense. Brody mentioned several of Ferris’ players on the first line and also made a point to mention freshman Emerson Goode who scored his first collegiate goals this past weekend. Brody discussed Ferris State playing from behind most of the season, but being able to make the necessary comebacks to force overtime in many games.

Tim asked Brody how Ferris State’s power play has looked. Brody said it started well but has not been good lately. The guys then lamented the fact that both Michigan Tech and Ferris State have some of the worst penalty kill units in the country. The guys talked about Ferris State’s travel plans to Houghton, Mich. Later in the show, Brody talked about having visited Houghton before, but never the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

The guys take the scenic route

The guys did an awful job of staying on track with the discussion this week. There were numerous “random question” segments including discussions on 3v3 overtime, their favorite UP pasties, when a popsicle stick becomes a tongue depressor and when a grilled cheese becomes a panini.

Bemidji State series review

Despite being the 2nd youngest on the podcast, Matt decided to be an old man and go to bed halfway through recording. Once he departed, the guys spent some time discussing Michigan Tech’s series against Bemidji State. Tim thought that the Friday night game was Tech’s best game of the season, so far. Rob agreed with this and was grumpy that he couldn’t see THG’s Discord reaction to Arvid Caderoth getting points. The guys talked about Tech’s collapse on Saturday after being up 4-0.

Would you like to own a timeshare?

The guys talked about the goaltending situation at Michigan Tech. Tim, Rob and Dustin all thought that Blake Pietila and Max Vayrynen should continue to split time. Tim thought that splitting the two would add a level of difficulty to playing Tech as it would force their opponents to adapt to two different goaltending styles. Brody chimed in with his own recollections of Blake Pietila playing very well against Ferris State last season. The guys discussed the possible impact of former Michigan Tech goalie coach Jamie Philips leaving on the current level of play.

Tim’s travel woes

The majority of the remainder of show was dedicated to Tim sharing his adventures over this past weekend while traveling home to Wisconsin. His adventures included multiple flat tires, a check engine light, and making sure that Zombieland rule #2 (the double tap) was followed on a deer that a different motorist also hit.

Cut for time

This weeks cut time for Patron is approximately 5 minutes. There was a discussion on when the Pairwise rankings become relevant. There was extended discussion on Tim’s weekend woes.
