Season 6 Episode 13 of the Chasing MacNaughton Podcast from Tech Hockey Guide; Pittsburgh Toilet. In this episode, Tim Braun, Rob Gilreath and Matt Cavender were joined by Dan Rubin who covers the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) for USCHO. In this episode they discussed the upcoming series between Michigan Tech and Clarkson, the season so far for the ECAC and differences between eastern and western hockey.

Clarkson

The guys spent quite a bit of time starting off the episode discussing Clarkson. Tim asked Dan to talk about Clarkson hiring their new coach. Dan talked about both Clarkson and Cornell being classy during the Cornell’s process of hiring former Clarkson head coach Casey Jones. Dan talked about Casey building a strong team culture at Clarkson and hoping Jean-François Houle could continue on that tradition.

The guys talked about the need for eastern hockey teams to play western hockey teams, especially the ECAC and CCHA who usually fight for the final NCAA Tournament spots. Dan talked about Clarkson having no reason to avoid going to the UP to play Tech, and Matt compared Clarkson and St. Lawrence to Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan where travel distance can get long.

Rob asked Dan to give Clarkson’s story so far this year. Dan thought that Clarkson could finish anywhere from third to eighth in the ECAC depending on how the other conference teams perform. Dan discussed some of the forwards that Clarkson lost from last season, but also highlighted some of the pickups the team got from the transfer portal. The guys talked about how the different ECAC teams utilize the transfer portal and Dan pointed out that the Ivy League schools cannot make use of the portal due to academic time restrictions for the athletes at their respective schools.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles

The guys talked about some of the differences between eastern hockey schools and western hockey schools, mainly focusing on the traveling and scheduling differences. Rob pointed out that eastern schools don’t play the same team two nights in a weekend like the western schools do. Dan talked about the eastern schools having travel partners and how that helps to make trips easier for the eastern schools.

The battle of the Techs

The guys previewed the upcoming series between Michigan Tech and Clarkson. The guys talked about the comparative loudness between the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena and the Cheel Arena at the Cheel Camput Center. Dan thought that Michigan Tech might have the magic formula to beat Clarkson thanks to Michigan Tech’s style of playing rough and in the corners. Dan pointed out that Clarkson has taken a lot of penalties this season and the guys talked about how good Michigan Tech’s power play has looked this season.

Cut for time

This episode’s cut time for Patrons is approximately 9 minutes long. There was extended discussion on the sound levels of arenas. The guys talked about their experiences with other fans at last year’s NCAA Tournament. Matt talked about specialty drinks he’s planning for his wedding. Tim talked about some of Tech’s high penalty minute players. The guys discussed football, the WNBA and baseball.
