Season 6 Episodes 15 & 16 of the Chasing MacNaughton Podcast from Tech Hockey Guide; Speedo Calendar and Unhinged Twitter. This week, Tim Braun and Rob Gilreath were joined by former play by play announcer for the Ferris State Bulldogs, Harrison Watt. In episode 15 they discussed Michigan Tech’s gold jersey’s and helmets, Ferris State head coach Bob Daniels potentially getting to 500 career wins, Ferris State’s and Michigan Tech’s seasons so far, and Michigan Tech’s series against Northern Michigan. In episode 16 they discussed Michigan Tech’s history of early season struggles, the new rules surrounding an official review for a major penalty, listener questions, how long Harrison think Bob Daniels will coach at Ferris State and Harrison’s thoughts on Ferris State hockey’s slide to mediocrity.

Gold domes

The conversation started with a discussion on Michigan Tech wearing gold helmets this past weekend against Northern Michigan. Harrison loved them and Tim was thrilled that the team managed to get the same shade of gold for both the jersey and the helmets. The guys tried to recall the last time Michigan Tech wore gold helmets. They also discussed their desire for allowing home teams to wear dark jerseys instead of always having to wear lighter colors.

Season reviews

Harrison talked about Ferris State’s season so far. He talked about the large number of new players on the roster and some of those players trying to do too much too early in the season. Overall Harrison thought that Ferris State will be a solid team but will take some time to learn how to play as a team. The guys talked about one of the players on Ferris State’s roster who transferred to New Hampshire, only to return to Ferris State this season.

The guys talked about Stiven Sardarian transfer to Michigan Tech from New Hampshire and Harrison talked about Michigan Tech having some of the best young offensive talent in the CCHA. The guys talked about the offense not being able to put things together during the Clarkson series. Tim talked about Michigan Tech being the second youngest team in the conference and how players such as Owen Baker may still be adjusting to having additional play time compared to last season. The guys talked about how much some effort players put in during play, and how watching in person versus a broadcast can change a viewer’s perspective.

Northern Michigan series review

There was a discussion on the goaltending situation at Michigan Tech. Tim held the same belief he has for a while, that Michigan Tech’s best solution is to have equal playing time for the goaltenders until Thanksgiving. Tim was also surprised that Derek Mullahy didn’t get pulled early in the second Northern Michigan game, thinking it might have motivated the team to play better. Harrison noted that Michigan Tech’s defensemen sometimes get too cautious on the power play and seem to be afraid to shoot the puck.

Tim talked about his seats during the away game at Northern Michigan and the Northern Michigan fan he talked to about starting up Mitch’s Misfits. The guys talked about some of the difference between the student sections at Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan during hockey games. Rob was happy that Michigan Tech was able to come back and win during the Saturday game.

Later in the show there was an extended discussion on an official review of a major penalty that ended up not being called. Tim talked about being confused by the on-ice explanation the fans received during the game and the guys talked about the new rule which allows officials to call a minor penalty after reviewing a play. Harrison didn’t think there was much more the officials could say to the fans in the stadium without drawing extra ire towards themselves. All of the guys agreed that not calling a major penalty on the play was the correct decision.

Ferris State hockey is mid

Towards the end of the show, Tim asked Harrison how long he thought Bob Daniels would coach at Ferris State. Though he had no direct knowledge, Harrison speculated that this would be Bob’s last season. Harrison talked at length about some of the problems Ferris State has had investing in the hockey program, especially after the team’s NCAA Championship game appearance in 2012. He tied these problems directly to the program’s slide to mediocrity. Tim also asked Harrison whether he thought Ferris State would look internally for their next head coach, or take the search nationally. Harrison didn’t know for sure, but made good cases for both options.

Cut for time

This week’s cut time for Patrons is 22 minutes long. Harrison talked about living in Washington and the hockey presence in Seattle. Rob talked about his experiences working in Seattle. The guys talked about Tim’s food acquisitions in the UP. Harrison told a story about being hung over in Marquette. There was a tangent where Tim and Rob vented frustration about Michigan Tech finishing lower in the conference than expected. The guys talked about difference flavor profiles in various foods. Listener questions were answered. The guys discussed different shades of green. There was extended conversation about Harrison’s upcoming podcast.
