With a long term injury to Max Vayrynen and an inexperienced third goaltender in Bryant Lee, Michigan Tech was faced with the precarious situation of having to rely solely on Derek Mullahy for the bulk of the regular season. However, help is on the way, as the Huskies secured a commitment from Ryan Manzella, a goaltender who had begun this season with the Sioux Falls Stampede of the USHL. Upon receiving Manzella’s commitment, Michigan Tech immediately enrolled him and added him to the roster for the second half of the season.
As a 2004 born goaltender, Manzella has a wealth of junior hockey experience. He’s had a very solid year with Sioux Falls, which indicates he’s likely ready for the opportunity to be Derek Mullahy’s primary backup. This is very much still Mullahy’s net, but reinforcements are needed and Manzella will provide that.
While the short term goaltending picture is now very clear, Manzella’s presence complicates the long term outlook in the Husky’s crease. One of Michigan Tech’s top recruits currently is goaltender Shika Gadzhiev, who will be in Houghton next fall. At the moment, the Huskies are slated to have all 3 of Vayrynen, Gadzhiev, and Manzella on next year’s roster. With three goaltenders who could command playing time, it would likely be a difficult situation for Michigan Tech’s staff to manage. However, there are significantly worse problems to have than the prospect of having too many good goaltenders.
