Season 6 Episode 25 of the Chasing MacNaughton Podcast from Tech Hockey Guide; Cadillac Of Pasties. This week, Tim Braun and Rob Gilreath were joined by multi-channel broadcaster Dave Ellis. In this episode they discussed listener questions and the upcoming Great Lakes Invitational (GLI).

Listener questions

The show started off with three listener questions. The first question was a bit tongue-in-cheek and asked Dave about Hancock being his favorite high school hockey team in the UP and who his favorite player to play for them was. Dave was wearing his Calumet jersey during recording and had a good time answering. The guys also discussed the logo on Dave’s jersey and how similar it was to the logo used by the LA Kings in the NHL. Rob and Dave spent some time reminiscing about skating at various UP hockey rinks and some of the local teams.

The second listener question came from a Discord user who’s dad and aunt used to live with Dave during their college days. Dave shared a couple stories about the living as a group and specifically mentioned the cats in the house who had very geopolitical names.

The final listener question for the week was THG’s own JZ asking his “silly question of the week.”

The Great Lakes Invitational

To no one’s surprise, a chunk of the episode was focused on the upcoming GLI. Dave talked about all of the improvements the broadcast team is making this year, including having their own camera and replay crew on site. Dave also talked about some of the pre-recorded features available for use. Dave was especially excited for the increase in available markets for the broadcast and streaming, and pointed out that TV6 will have a free stream to watch on their website. Dave talked at length about how important to him it is that people know about the GLI tournament and get to watch it. Tim was excited to hear about the step ups in production.

Dave brought up an interesting goalie stat related to the teams participating at the GLI and the guys talked about the history of TV6 broadcasting the Michigan Tech/Northern Michigan hockey games. The guys didn’t spend a ton of time talking about the GLI matchups, but Dave did offer up his opinion that Tech has a decent chance to beat Western Michigan in the opening round. There was also a brief discussion on some of the players that Michigan State will be missing during the GLI.

At the end of the GLI conversation, the guys looked ahead to future versions of the tournament. Dave expressed excitement to see new teams in the future and Tim expressed his displeasure at having two CCHA teams present. The guys talked about the lack of interest from the eastern hockey schools due to travel distance as well as the GLI’s desire to promote the more “local” teams in the region.

Cut for time

This week’s cut time for Patrons is approximately 15 minutes long. There was a conversation about Rob being a cord cutter. The guys talked soccer and fantasy football. There was a discussion on the World Juniors and Tom Leppa’s participation. There were numerous “end of the show” topics covered.
