Season 6 Episode 26 of the Chasing MacNaughton Podcast from Tech Hockey Guide; GLI Semi-Final. This week, Rob Gilreath and Matt Cavender recorded live from the Great Lakes Invitational (GLI) during the semi-final game between Northern Michigan and Michigan State. Rob and Matt were joined by Michigan Tech mega fans Chris Nesbitt and Zack Papciak. In this episode they discussed Michigan Tech’s game against Western Michigan, the Northern Michigan/Michigan State game, the mechanical issues that plagued Van Andel’s Zambonis, the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) and many other various topics.

Michigan Tech/Western Michigan game review

The largest topic of conversation between the guys was Tech’s game against Western. All of the guys were happy with Tech’s performance against a Western team that’s one of the top teams nationally. Zack was happy to get the pairwise points and hoped that Tech would use the game as a stepping stone for the rest of the season. Matt was not disappointed in the overtime loss for Tech. Chris thought the third period was good for Tech after a weak second period, and also talked about Tech playing well for 45 minutes. The guys discussed some of the on-ice calls that were/were not made during the game as well as the crowd size during the games.

The guys talked about Tech being more willing to get into the “hard ice” this season, and how all of Tech’s goals were produced in that area against Western. Matt particularly liked the fact that the young, fast skaters for Tech are also willing to get into the crease and clean up rebounds. The guys did knock Tech’s inexperience on some poor line changes which lead to good scoring chances for Western.

Various discussion topics

Outside of the discussion on the Tech/Western game the guys discussed a number of other topics. There was plenty of commentary on the Northern Michigan/Michigan State game, which was being played while the guys recorded. Zack told a story about visiting Canada. Matt and Zack shared some stories about their time in the Mitch’s Misfits leadership group, specifically, Zack talked about Matt’s failure at planning a trip to Ann Arbor, Michigan for a Tech game. Zack also talked about his first trip he planned as the Misfit’s travel coordinator, which was to the Duluth Ice Breaker Tournament in 2017.

The guys provided several minutes of gripping and enthralling discussion on a Zamboni leaking hydraulic fluid during the intermission. Matt, as an industry professional, provided his insight to the matter.

There was a lengthy discussion on the ACHA, which was mostly Matt venting his frustrations about the local ACHA team that plays at the rink where he drives Zamboni. Chris and Zack put Matt in his place about the ACHA and talked about the league/teams not being as full of themselves as Matt implied.

The guys talked about the lack of women’s Division 1 hockey in the state of Michigan, and Chris said he’d fund a team at Tech if he ever wins the lottery. The guys talked about the BIG having the funding to start up women’s teams and what the Title IX implications might be.

There was a conversation about the NHL and how well Utah has been doing since they moved from Phoenix. The guys discussed some of the major media markets on the west coast and how much the game of hockey has grown in those states. There was also a discussion on the World Junior Championship and the stadiums being used for those games.
