Season 6 Episode 27 of the Chasing MacNaughton Podcast from Tech Hockey Guide; We’re Not #4. This week, in the second episode recorded from the GLI, Rob Gilreath and Matt Cavender were joined by Mitch’s Misfits president Kellan Meloche and former pep band member Aaron Christianson. In this episode they discussed Aaron’s journey to attending Michigan Tech, Kellan and Rob visiting different hockey arenas, favorite Misfits and pep band traditions and Michigan Tech’s game against Northern Michigan at the GLI.
Pep band/Misfits crossover
The episode started with Aaron telling his Michigan Tech origin story. His dad was the band director at Michigan Tech in the mid 2010s, which made attending Tech an easy choice for Aaron. Aaron talked about the long drives back to his home state, New Jersey, while he attended Tech. Aaron talked about his time as a student director of the pep band and how natural of a fit the role was for him. He talked about it being a fun bonding experience with his dad as well.
Kellan and Aaron exchanged thoughts on the others’ organizations favorite game day traditions. Aaron’s favorite Misfit’s tradition is the “we have the puck” cheer and Kellan’s favorite pep band tradition is the tune the band plays while leaving the building after a Tech win. Rob talked about hearing the pep band echo through the streets of Grand Rapids before the GLI games. The last pep band story Aaron shared was about the time the pep band played at a funeral for a long time fan.
Kellan talked about being the only Misfits member who has been to every Tech game so far this season. His favorite games to attend are the one without other Misfit’s members, which allows him to experience the opponents arena without feeling the need to cheer loudly. Rob asked Kellan about his favorite game so far this season and Kellan’s answer was the 9-5 Tech win over Bemidji State.
Michigan Tech/Northern Michigan game review
After Kellan and Aaron left, Rob and Matt spent a few minutes discussing the third place GLI game between Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan. Matt felt relief more than excitement at the Tech win and bemoaned the fact that Tech didn’t put Northern away early. Both guys agreed that Tech needed to do more on their five minute major power play. The guys gave Ryan Manzella a load of praise for playing well after coming on mid-way through the game against Tech’s biggest rival. The guys also gave a ton of praise to Stiven Sardarian and his play. Matt noted that Stiven always seems to be in position to receive the puck and Rob talked about how Stiven slows the game down when he has the puck on his stick.
