Season 6 Episodes 30 and 31 of the Chasing MacNaughton Podcast from Tech Hockey Guide; Carly Let’s Talk and Truculent. This week, Tim Braun and Matt Cavender were joined by Carly Zucker, who hosts the podcast “Here We Go with Carly Zucker“. This episode continued the THG annual tradition of talking about mental health for Bell Let’s Talk Day. In this episode, they talked about Carly’s decision to open up about her mental health struggles, how she handles life on a daily basis, her experience with treatment centers, and how her mental health struggles affect her as a parent. After Carly left, Tim and Matt talked Michigan Tech’s series against Minnesota State, previewed Tech’s upcoming series against Northern Michigan, called out the THG Discord for some of its takes, and Tim talked about the recent passing of long time Milwaukee Brewers radio broadcaster Bob Uecker.
Author’s note: This episode and these liner notes mention suicide and mental health struggles. If you or someone you know is feeling suicidal please call or text 988, the Crisis Lifeline.
Carly Let’s Talk
The conversation with Carly started with Tim asking her why she decided to open up about her mental health. Carly talked about her tendency to isolate herself when she has bad mental health episodes, and wanting to tell her story to take the power back in her life. She talked about the process being a rollercoaster, but also talked about forming deep connections with other people who have stories similar to hers. She talked about feeling like herself during treatment and slowly getting back into life. Carly talked about having suicidal thoughts from a young age and how it is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. She hoped that her conversations and struggles will help others to open up about their mental health struggles.
Matt asked Carly how she has managed being a mother while having her mental health struggles. Carly talked about there being a lot guilt and having many days that she was tired and not willing to get out of bed. She talked about constantly battling the idea of needing to do more for her kids. Tim talked about some struggles his daughter has been facing at school and how he’s been having to navigate the situation and help to make sure she has a solid mental foundation. Carly emphasized the idea that her happiness is not her kids’ responsibility.
Carly talked about some of the activities that make her happy on a daily basis. She talked about being active in the recovery community and hearing many stories similar to hers. Carly and Tim both talked about the many different treatment options available and the importance of finding one that fits each person’s personality. Carly talked about the importance of researching various treatment centers before deciding which one to visit. Carly talked about feeling a drive to help other find resources to help with their mental health struggles. She mentioned a couple organizations available for the public to use to help direct them to mental health resources in their area.
Minnesota State series review
Tim and Matt both praised Ryan Manzella’s performance against Minnesota State over the weekend, though Tim was quick to throw a disclaimer on his enthusiasm and talked about there being a reason Ryan was available for Tech to pick up. Matt talked about being much more comfortable with Tech’s goalie situation now that Ryan has had some time to settle into the team. Both hoped that Derek Mullahy could get back to form and provide solid goaltending each weekend.
Tim thought that the Friday game was one of Tech’s worst showings in many years and Matt agreed it was a disappointing effort. The guys talked about the play which resulted in Tech getting a five minute power play at the end of the game. This lead to a conversation about officiating and how the sharing of officials across different conferences can create more consistency in calls.
Northern Michigan series preview
Matt praised Northern on their recent form of play and thought they’d be a problem team next season. Matt had a hard time giving his prediction but settled on a split. Tim was happy that Tech has been respecting the rivalry despite Northern’s poor performance. Tim also hoped that Tech could play better with the lead, if they get one. Tim predicted Tech getting five points on the weekend.
Tim calls out THG Discord
Towards the end of the show, Tim took a couple minutes to call out some of the takes on the THG Discord. He reminded fans that Tech is the youngest team in the conference and Matt shared his thoughts, including his hopes that the team would have been further along with their development at this point in the season. The guys talked about some of the power play struggles and the too high expectations put on the team at the beginning of the season. They talked about the injuries that the defense has sustained and how those injuries relate to Chase Pietila getting increased ice time.
A legend passes
The very last topic on the episode was Tim talking about the recent passing of Bob Uecker, the radio voice of the Milwaukee Brewers. Tim talked about the importance of Uecker in his life and how much Uecker’s passing has affected him.
Cut for time
This week’s cut time for Patrons is approximately three minutes long. There was an awkward goodbye between the guys and Carly and Matt talked about creating a tier list of various league’s officials.
