Now that fall is closing in, it’s time for the Old Dog to take a look at the WCHA and see where it stands in the national scheme of things. In this first dive, we’ll peer into the competitive nature of the six NCAA Division I conferences by looking at last season's results.
The Michigan Tech Huskies (19-15-5) kept their season alive last weekend in Northern Minnesota and now must head to the southern part of the state to face the Minnesota State Mavericks (28-7-1). These two faced each other in Mankato in late October, their only meetings of the season. MSU dominated MTU, outscoring the Huskies 8-4 in a one-sided matchup. History favors the Mavs, winners of three of the last four and undefeated against the Huskies at home in the last 10 matchups.
Only one team moved through the poll standings this week: Alaska dropped from 6th to 8th on the heels of a 5-2; 4-3 sweep by Michigan Tech in Houghton. All of this week's matchups seem lopsided enough to be unlikely to have a significant effect on next week's poll; MTU@FSU is the closest matchup by poll position.
